The Voyager Pro GPS unit has been an amazing piece of technology to bolt to your bike. It offers massive re-assurance of where you’re going and where the other members of your group are at when equipped with the VP GPS.
It has enhanced the safety and enjoyment of our rides in a few ways. Safety, when a group member stops moving, you can see their last location and navigate back to them.
Enjoyment, what’s more fun than leading a ride? When the whole crew is leading with their own lines! When your whole group has a VP, you can look down and see where everyone’s at, and what lines they’re taking. So if you get bored of that one buddy who always leads, and you want to explore, go find your own line then navigate back to them when you’re ready to find them. This also adds to the safety of your ride to reduce group splitting / searching, which is about the least fun thing you can spend your time doing in the backcountry, searching for ole uncle Bob again…
These are high tech pieces of hardware and software being brought into a very harsh winter environment, and don’t come without periodic maintenance. You need to ensure your contact pins between the head unit, and dock station get cleaned and do not develop residue to reduce the effectiveness of the electrical connections. Syncing between a group, or losing a member due to distance can throw the map off, so you need to know how to use the unit to re-connect them when that happens. Inspect your power leads from the unit to the bikes battery to ensure they are not rubbing and potentially cause a short.
We recommend picking up a spare dock, AC wall charger, center mount bar mount, protective case, and spare battery leads so you have everything you need to keep the unit running smoothly and backup for any sort of impact or wear. Once you ride with a VP, you’ll understand how they truly do increase the quality and safety of your rides.
